SAVOY HOTEL

The Savoy Hotel is currently on the verge of being gone forever.  The roof has been leaking for the past few years and Mother Nature is rapidly trying to reclaim what man had built 100 years ago.  Fortunately, the brick and masonry outer shell is strong and structurally sound. But the inner wooden framework is being damaged by the rain, snow and ice.

In general, the building is still very original and there is enough intact to replicate items that are damaged.  Below is a breakdown of the status of the Savoy’s major elements.

ROOF

Very bad condition. Needs major work immediately. NEW ROOF ALMOST COMPLETE!! click here

ORNATE TIN CEILING

Much of the stamped tin ceiling is destroyed by water, but some is salvageable or can be reproduced.

HUGE MOSAIC TILE FLOORS

There is mosaic tile flooring throughout most of the first floor. It is rather indestructible and can be cleaned and polished, but some sections need reinforcement.

LIGHT FIXTURES

Many of the original chandeliers and wall sconces still are in place and can be saved.

WOODWORK

Most of the woodwork, trim, and doors can be saved, but it all needs a lot of refinishing.

WINDOWS

The original wooden double-hung sashes are about 70% in place.  The missing or broken sashes can be reproduced, using the old existent ones as patterns.

PLUMBING FIXTURES

Many of the original clawfoot bathtubs and sinks are still in the building and can be used to maintain the Savoy’s charm.

WOODEN FLOORING

The wooden flooring on the 2nd and 3rd floors is mostly pine or fir.  At least half of it is probably destroyed beyond repair, but identical replacement flooring is available.

WALLS

The walls are almost all covered with the original plaster and wooden lathe.  Most of the plaster is falling off the walls  and will need to be replaced.

MECHANICALS

The electric, plumbing, heat and air will all need to be updated to make the property safe and functioning.

FIRE PREVENTION

The original fire hose standpipes are still present.  But a complete new sprinkler system should be installed to assure that The Savoy doesn't fall victim to a fire and will be with us for a long long time.
